Statement.

My work primarily focuses on techniques and the finer details particularly in sketchbooks and final pieces. Techniques such as embroidery and photo stencil prints combined with 3D aspects such as frills and flowers were used in my work in January 2010 to create a collection of vivid, textural garments. My intentions are always to explore the techniques to their full potential, finding new methods to produce detail and pattern on my garments which I hope to continue to do at a higher level.
This is also reflected in my work for the unit called “Appropriation” in which I took the practice of paper cutting and applied it to fabric, cutting intricate patterns into paper and fabric. I was interested in the distinction between something beautiful; such as a paper cut and a drab object like a jumpsuit, and the result of combing of the two.
My experimental nature extends to the patterns I use for my garments as I often modify existing patterns or create my own as I feel this gives me more scope for creativity in my designs. Life drawing classes on the Art Foundation course have improved my drawing skills which has consequently enhanced my figure drawing on which I express my design ideas.
On the first unit of the Foundation Course called “In the News”, I experimented with sculpture and film processes creating a world in different materials and filming the destruction of the worlds through natural resources. I made a wax world that was lit with candles and left to melt from the heat to demonstrate the effects of global warming.  The skills I learnt throughout the workshops have enabled me to branch out in my ideas, for example in my current piece of work which I am looking to combine fabric and porcelain in an instillation piece.
My sketchbooks are an integral part of my work, expressing my ideas and outlining the progression of these thoughts.  They pay particular attention to intricacy with many layers resulting in them being like a separate 2D piece in themselves and very much replicates the way in which I think.
